Washington State is well known for its spectacular scenery and home to great outdoor adventures. The attractions are amazing, from natural wonders like the rainforests, towering volcanos, desert valleys, sparkling blue ocean water, lakes and rivers to the cool emerald hues of breathtaking mountain sites. The city of Spokane has been named the “All American City” twice.
Olympia is Washington’s capital. Seattle is the largest city and a flourishing metropolis – driven by a diverse and resilient economy and strong entrepreneurial spirit. Medina is the home of the United States wealthiest man, Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Microsoft Corporation is located in Redmond.
The State of Washington is the only state to be named after a United States President. Before it became a state, the territory was called Columbia (named after the Columbia River). When it was granted statehood, the name was changed to Washington, supposedly so people would not confuse it with The District of Columbia.
Washington’s total area is 71,303 square miles.
